Kaga-daiko (Kaga-style Japanese drum)

Maeda Toshiie was born in 1537. He was a very powerful lord, and the close friend and confidant of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1581, Toshiie became the lord of the Kaga domain.

Toshiie’s younger son Toshitsune, the third lord Maeda, is generally credited with ensuring the Maedas’ dominance, by his alliances by marriage with the Tokugawa and the care he took to avoid any pretence of military ambition. Instead the vast wealth of the Maedas was channelled into arts and crafts, many of which are still nationally renowned.

In 1639, the 45-year-old Toshitsune transferred responsibility for the family to his son, Mitsutaka, and moved from the Kanazawa castle to the Komatsu castle going into retirement. He gathered farm people together in the Komatsu castle and gave a feast. The drum played at the time is thought to be the beginning of Kaga-daiko.
